Splurge vs. Steal – Little Black Collared Dress

20 Sep

By Whitney

The black dress section of my closet is quite substantial and for good reason.  Black dresses are my go-to for everything because they are just SO easy!  I saw this Kate Spade Catarina dress and thought it would be perfect for work and play with that sweet collar detailing adding just enough to keep it from being boring.  I held off and I’m glad I did because I came across this Asos tulip dress that fit the bill perfectly.  It’s actually a more flattering style for me because it’s fitted and the studded detailing on the collar takes it from being sweet to chic.

Splurge vs. Steal - Black Collar Dress

Splurge:  Kate Spade Catarina Dress – $398

Steal:  Asos Tulip Dress with Collar Detail – $47 (was $68)

ASOS Round up

14 Aug

by Lauren

Honestly my love for ASOS grows fonder by the minute – I find that their stuff is affordable (obviously) and unique!  I find it can be hard to find pieces by  mainstream designers that aren’t already being worn by your friends / other bloggers etc… but ASOS has proven to be a good solution for that.

I have had great success with my ASOS purchases this summer and thought I should share a few of them.

I love this little swing blouse with the crochet collar.  I have been wearing it with  this cute pair of ASOS mint shorts (below).

This ruffle collar blouse is a bit too dramatic for the summertime, but I think it will be the perfect amount of fall “flare” with skinny pants next month.

I have already mentioned this dress on the blog, but I absolutely loved it when it arrived.  Like I’ve mentioned, I think a dropped waist silhouette is playful and different against a sea of strapless dresses.  I got the strawberry, but I am tempted to get the black too.

{Note: this runs big by ASOS standards.  Go down 1 size}

Tuxedo Shirt

I haven’t purchased this but I think it’s super cool.  It’s the perfect Saturday night shirt for fall and would look great with your waxed jeans.

Dress Find <$100

I am a huge fan of the dropped waist trend.  For someone without much of a shape, it adds some pizzazz where your body does not!  I happened upon this dress on ASOS, which I think is super chic (and a steal at $100).  I got the pink (even though I LOVE the black).  I need some more summer dress options for when the hell that is the bar exam ends and pink is obviously the better choice in that regard.

Splurge vs. Steal – Floral Blazer

Splurge vs. Steal - Floral Blazer

By Whitney

I have loved this Rebecca Taylor Hawaii print for a while whether it be on a dress, pants, in white…it’s just really pretty.  I think it’s awesome how she incorporated the summery dark floral print with hints of black dressing up the blazer (and making it SO easy to pair with your lbds and black skinnies!).  But the price was always a big pill to swallow.  In comes Asos with a blazer consisting of an equally chic print and cut.  At $100, this is a lot more affordable and doesn’t sacrifice anything!

Splurge:  Rebecca Taylor Hawaii Zip Jacket – $495 (on sale for $300)

Steal:  Asos A Wear Digital Floral Blazer – $101

The Dressy Sweatshirt

12 Mar

by Lauren

One of the trends I am really into right now is the dressy sweatshirt.  When done correctly the look can be vibrant, chic & unexpected.  Done incorrectly and well… you just look like you didn’t get dressed for the day.  Since sweatshirts typically have a bit of volume, you need to be careful about what you put on the bottom – tailored and structured bottoms are best – think: non voluminous shorts and pants.  You don’t want to look bulky.  The other key is to add some baubles – dress it up with a statement necklace or big earrings.

Striped Sweatshirt

This striped sweatshirt comes in multiple colors.

I love the color of and quilts on this one!

Anything slightly patriotic makes my heart sing.

The great thing about this trend, is that when it dies – you can recycle the sweatshirts into your gym, PJ, and lounging wardrobes!

ASOS is on Fire

6 Mar

by Lauren

ASOS has been absolutely killing it lately.  So much that their site may be eclipsing my go-to site, Shopbop.com, for inspiration.  Here are a few of my recent favorites:

I absolutely love the shape of this coat (by Warehouse) & the eye-catching stripes.

Floral Midi

I love the colors on this floral midi dress – the cut may be dicey, but for this price it is worth a try!

White on White

“White on White” is one of my favorite trends for spring – and we just love the pale monochrome that is going on with these pants and this top {the pants are also available in Navy, which offsets the metallic waistband wonderfully}

Bow Print

Whitney purchased this dress & loves it!

Sister, Sister

6 Feb

by Lauren

So I think Groundhog’s Day was recently. The reason I am not sure: I don’t care.  Groundhog’s Day has got to be the biggest POS holiday.  Not only is it full of lies, its namesake of a blockbuster failure underscored how pointless the day is.  We don’t need an oversized rodent to tell us how much winter is left – I can tell you that there is always more winter left from the beginning of February.  Maybe that is the irony in the film – nope nope pretty certain that film existed to extort money by filming 30 minutes of footage and repeating it 7 times.

This does have a point – my sister has made a request for some clothing to get her through the remaining weeks of winter. Stipulations: going out appropriate, relatively cheap since the winter clothing budget was spent ages ago, motivational.  I hear you sister soul: going out in the freezing cold (particularly Chicago’s frigid temps) gets exhausting.

I went straight to Asos for this request & of course found way too many things that I MUST HAVE NOW.

Asos studded sweatshirt

Beyond obsessed with this studded sweatshirt – sure, it’s super casual, but with a pair of black pants, heels, a cool jacket, and some stacked bracelets you could make this into a sick going out outfit.  Katelyn – Get this.

L Sweatshirt

I got this in the mint color.  It has a giant “L” on it – duh.  For those of you without a reason to purchase a giant L sweatshirt.  I’m not sure what to tell you.  Your initials are inferior.

Short Sleeve Studs

ASOS Studded Short Sleeve Sweater
I was obviously in a studded mood when I wrote this.  I love this sweater.

Swan Dress
As we know, Whitney and I are suckers for all of the Asos animal prints – I love the structure on this dress – its ladylike and my guess is that it’s flattering.

Bow dress

Bow Dress
I mean what do we even say about this – it’s adorable and affordable

High Waisted Shorts
Since shorts are my favorite things ever – I had to include these.  They’re so cool!

Bali Shirt

Bali Shirt

This shirt is super versatile (& would look super cool with the shorts pictured above since it would highlight the waist on the shorts!)

Bow Shirt

Bow Shirt
Love how dramatic this is – it’s also super versatile

Disclaimer:  Over the course of writing this post, the available sizes in each of these items has diminished significantly – if you like something, order quick!  I will keep browsing for more great deals on Asos but want to get these out to you ASAP so you can browse sizes before they sell out!

Rockin’ Reindeer

by Lauren & Whitney

It’s so bad… it’s good.  That is fashion irony for you & we are super into it as the holidays approach.  For instance, wearing Reindeers on your sweater was so uncool, that now, it is cool again.  We even like to add a cotton turtleneck underneath for extra, overt irony of what is now so hip it hurts.  Check out these options:

And for that special critter (wanna be reindeer) in your life, this Land’s End pick benefits the Quechua Indians:
