Splurge vs. Steal – A Chic Printed Pleated Skirt

28 Jan

By Whitney

When looking at the pleated skirts last week, I found some fun ones with colorblocking that could be a different touch for your office outfits.  This Theory skirt is pretty and would look great with just a plain white silk blouse.  A very easy outfit.  I didn’t love the price tag so when I came across this Halogen version, I thought it was a perfect substitute.

Splurge:  Theory Zeyn Midi Skirt – $475

Steal:  Halogen Sunburst Skirt – $79

Schoolgirl Pleats Are Back

22 Jan

By Whitney

Last year, my mom gave me an old Theory pleated skirt of hers that I wear with a Milly sweater.  It’s one of those outfits that I love putting on because it’s a) adorable and b) work appropriate.  Not the easiest combo to pull off but it works.  Pleated skirts are everywhere this year and while I’m a little too old to rock one of those minis, there are tons of options to show your ladylike side.

Cold Weather Wear

12 Jan

by Lauren

If you’re like me, extreme winter temperatures and weather will always be a shock to the system.  I HATE being cold.  I think it’s miserable, and I really don’t care how ridiculous I look avoiding the discomfort of freezing to death.

I think these are pretty stylish and I actually ordered them for my snowy commute to work.  In hindsight, I’m realizing that they may not be the most practical boots on earth.  Whups.

Totally Toasty Ear Warmer

I think this “ear warmer” is so cute (and practical).  Though my dad would say you lose XX% of your body heat through your head and would advise something that covers the TOP of your head, such as this one:

Barca Slouchy Hat

J. Crew

Every lady needs a pair of leather gloves.

Jonathan Adler

Personally, I think its important to have a casual pair of gloves as well.

J. Crew

My favorite part of the ensemble – the scarf pulls everything together.  I love this “snood” from J. Crew and it is 40% off right now!

Splurge vs. Steal – Black & White Bow Blouse

12 Nov

By Whitney

You really can never have too many blouses that go with work and play.  I have a few that are my go-to’s and they vary in price points – JCrew to Zara to Rebecca Taylor to Phillip Lim. Everything.  I love Maje and I saw this top and thought how great it would be for a simple black pencil skirt to work or under a blazer with black skinnies on a casual Friday.  I love these bow blouses because they look great with my hair up in a bun (i.e. I’m tired and don’t feel like washing my hair).  Then I saw the Zara version and didn’t even think of why I would spent $200+ extra on the same top.  Zara’s version comes in other colors too but the black and white is a classic.  Why mess with tradition??

Splurge:  Maje Gustin Contrast Bow Muslin Top – $260

Steal:  Zara Shirt with Bow Collar – $50

Shopbop F&F – Whitney’s Picks

15 Oct

By Whitney

As Lauren so wonderfully pointed out yesterday, Shopbop’s Friends and Family began yesterday (and runs through Thursday at midnight).  25% off of most everything with code FAMILY25.  If you are a reader of bloggers, you know this is quite the event since pretty much everyone has posted their picks.  My favorites are below but you know what, go crazy.

As a sidenote, two other stellar F&F’s are going on.  Saks also has 25% off with code FRNFAM through Monday  (my favorite?  This perfect Rebecca Taylor cocktail dress for a wedding or holiday party this season).  My top jewelry site BaubleBar has 25% off through tomorrow night with code FRIENDS25 and there are some amazing deals to be had.  I’m loving this statement necklace, these mint green stunner earrings, another statement necklace (or this more subtle one too) and of course a ton of different types of 360 studs.

WCH Shopbop Picks

Clockwise from top left:  Loeffler Randall Marita Boot – $695 // Vince Haircalf Slip on Sneakers – $229 // Kate Spade Sapphire Earrings – $48 // Rails Carmen Button Down (in lots of great plaids) – $96 (was $128) // L.K. Bennett Alma Cutout Sandals – $395 // Linea Pelle Hip Belt  (my favorite brand for A+ belts with jeans) – $120 // Tibi Simona Jacquard Dress – $395 // Julie & Co Apres Soiree Necklace – $80 // Vince Hooded Coat (this is just so gorge it’s worth the hefty price tag) – $695 // Cooper & Ella Susan Double V Blouse – $125 // Monserat De Lucca Clutch – $129

Shopbop F&F – 25% Off

It’s our favorite time of year!! Shopbop Friends & Family starts today – enjoy 25% off with the code FAMILY25!  Usually I get totally overwhelmed by this exciting news and balk and don’t order anything I end up keeping or I just freeze altogether and can’t make decisions.  This year, I am prepared.  Here are a few of the things I have been eyeing:

DKNY Cape Dress

If you have room for a little extra drama in your life, buy this.

Sneakers, Cotu

It is impossibly hard to find casual, comfortable shoes for the winter – so a fresh pair of sneakers is high on my list for running errands and commuting to work.

Vince lace overlay blouse

Whenever I can find a pretty, long-sleeved, yet versatile top – I jump on it.  This one has just the right amount of detail to make it fun for a night out.

Susanna Monaco Shift Dress

There is something so simplistically elegant about this – I think this dress would prove to be quite versatile as the seasons change.  It is great for date night, a work event – and will look cute with tights when the weather changes.  (Also available in this spicy blue version).

Mara Hoffman beaded dress

I think this dress is quite chic.  I also think it would look awesome with a thin, tight turtleneck layered underneath.

BCBG Peplum Skirt

How great is this for a work to happy hour transition?  I would probably order this one size up to make it office appropriate.

Similarly speaking, I LOVE this Elizabeth and James Pencil Skirt

(wear it with a plain blouse (option 2) or a fitted turtleneck)

Equipment Aubrey Dress

There is only one left!  And I suspect it will be gone momentarily, but I may have to comb the internet for this little minx.  (Found it!)

Jonathan Adler Tic, Tac, Toe

Because who doesn’t love a friendly game?

By the way, F&F is a great time to stock up on basics — if you don’t have the following, I suggest you seriously consider giving them a try!

1. Theory Sartorial Blouse (perfect for work & play)
2.  Vince Turtleneck (great for layering)
3. Paul & Joe Sister Sweater (chunky knits are always a great idea)
4.  Loeffler Randall Tamsin Pumps (work place must)
5.  Milly sweater dress  (a perennial favorite)
6.  Anything Equipment

Theory Picks

As I have started to get older (le sigh), I’ve noticed myself gravitating toward classic pieces season after season.  This is partly because I think that is what older people do and partly because I am spending all of my money on home furnishings… I can’t really get too invested in trendy clothes.  Last weekend when I was visiting Whitney in NYC (YAY!) I popped into the Theory store – a great go-to for a classic refresh in the fall.  There were so many great things!  My FAVORITE is this poncho I picked up… I got it in gray, but I think I need it in every single color.  (In the first week, I wore it three times – it is just so easy breezy!!  Isn’t this camel color to die for?)

The poncho looks incredible with these leather paneled leggings for a night out.  (No joke these are the most flattering leggings to date).

And as always, the theory coats are spectacular…This Naomo jacket looks biker when its unzipped and impeccably polished when its closed up, lending extra versatility to a fall look.

Tuesday Lust List – Welcome Fall!

23 Sep

By Whitney

As of 10:29PM last night, we are officially in Fall!   While fall means deeper hues, thicker fabrics and amazing coats, overall, September is a tough month for clothes.  If I wear a dress to work, I’m freezing.  If I wear pants, I’m hot.  All in all, it’s pretty much a confused month.  What’s on my wish list lately has reflected this crazy month and it’s totally all over the place.
